About this item: Copy of OVER IN THE WETLANDS picture book

Donated by …

 Caroline Starr Rose

Caroline Starr Rose was named a Publishers Weekly Flying Start Author for her debut novel, May B., which was an ALA-ALSC Notable Children’s Book. Caroline spent her childhood in the deserts of Saudi Arabia and New Mexico, camping by the Red Sea in one and eating red chile in the other. She has taught social studies and English, and worked to instill in her students a passion for books, an enthusiasm for experimenting with words, and a curiosity about the past. She lives in New Mexico.

Over in the Wetlands: A Hurricane-on-the-Bayou Story

Publishing in time for the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, here is a beautiful read-aloud about animal families preparing for an impending storm in their bayou habitat.

Journey to the Louisiana wetlands and watch as all the animals of the bayou experience one of nature’s most dramatic and awe-inspiring events: a hurricane. The animals prepare—swimming for safer seas, finding cover in dens, and nestling their young close to protect them. During the height of the storm, even the trees react, cracking and moaning in the wind. At last, the hurricane yawns and rests, and animals come out to explore their world anew.

BLUE BIRDS

It’s 1587 and twelve-year-old Alis has made the long journey with her parents from England to help settle the New World, the land christened Virginia in honor of the Queen. And Alis couldn’t be happier. While the streets of London were crowded and dirty, this new land, with its trees and birds and sky, calls to Alis. Here she feels free. But the land, the island Roanoke, is also inhabited by the Roanoke tribe and tensions between them and the English are running high, soon turning deadly.
Amid the strife, Alis meets and befriends Kimi, a Roanoke girl about her age. Though the two don’t even speak the same language, these girls form a special bond as close as sisters, willing to risk everything for the other. Finally, Alis must make an impossible choice when her family resolves to leave the island and bloodshed behind.
A beautiful, tender story of friendship and the meaning of family, Caroline Starr Rose delivers another historical gem.

Blog Auction to Help Save Veronica Bartles Home

Amid my summer chaos, I missed Brenda Drake's call out for donations of writer-related goods in order to set up an auction to help Pitch Wars Mentor Veronica Bartles. Pitch Wars had a huge impact on me last year and I interacted with Veronica on several occasions throughout it. She's a part of my writing community and a wonderful person too.

She's also a fellow military wife. She and her family bought a home in Maryland, but military orders sent them to New Mexico. In preparation to move back to their home this summer, Veronica took a trip to Maryland to discover the home had major water damage and mold. Their insurance refused to cover any of it.

A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up to help raise money for the Bartles, and Brenda Drake used above mentioned donations as services to auction off for high bids toward this fund. If you can, please donate to it.  Together, we can help them rebuild! Even a $5 donation can make all the difference!

Though I won several bids and donated to the fund, I wanted to do more. Turns out, I'm not the only one who feels this way! Brenda was bombarded with additional people willing to donate after the auction had already started. Like me, they wanted to give more. So I volunteered my blog as a place to hold a second auction of us late-comers. So if you bid and didn't win on Brenda's auction, here's another chance to get a little something when you give!

My auction will close on Wednesday, July 29   Friday, July 31st at Noon PST.

If you’re interested in an auction item, simply enter the bid in the comments of the post for the item. The starting bid is $10. Once you’ve placed your bid, make sure to check back or click the box at the bottom right of the post labeled "Notify me” so as each bid comes in, you'll get an email and can return to counter bid.

For critique items, make sure to read the donor’s bio to determine if they will be a good fit for your manuscript. Manuscripts do not have to be finished for partial critiques, only full critiques.

Do not post bids to this post. Make sure to post them to the individual post for the item you wish to bid on. (See the list below for the list of posts and items offered.)

Do not place bids in the comment of this post. Bids should be entered in the individual auction item post.

No bids will be accepted after the auction closes.

The winners will be asked to go to the Bartles’ Go Fund Me page (Don’t donate until you win the bid, unless you want to donate now as an added help for the Bartles) and donate the amount of the bid they placed on the item. When your name posts on the page, it will be confirmation of payment and I will post further instructions in the comments of the posts.

Here are all the awesome items up for bid …

Perhaps he’s a superhero that’s trained with the world’s finest heroes, or he’s a lifelong geek who sings well and makes a decent dish of spaghetti. It’s also plausible that he’s been plotting to take over the world since he was ten, or that he’s since been writing novels to stir the heart and spark the imagination. Either way he lives in an invisible spaceship that’s currently hovering above Phoenix, Arizona.

Dee Poirier

I’m an internet and email marketing professional located in the Orlando, Florida area.
Above all else, I have a passion for email marketing — Weird right? Second to that, ecommerce. Improving conversions, following trends, forecasting, these are the things that make me tick.

I’m turning my thirteen years of experience with usability, conversion rate optimization, email marketing, and e-commerce into tips that can help you improve your business.

Why? Because I want to see more marketing that works. I love nothing more than seeing a great campaign that moves me. Whether it moves me to buy, click, or just interact.

I’ve also spent years in the development and design trenches. This gives me an intense focus on usability and conversion rate optimization through design.  Most importantly, I make websites that work for customers. Clicks are worth nothing if they don’t become dollars.

Some of my previous clients include fortune 100 companies, as seen on TV products, entertainment icons, and giants in the travel, healthcare, and ecommerce industries.

If you’re looking for an email marketing consultant – I’m not currently seeking clients. If you want to reach out anyway, feel free. However, if you are in the travel industry, I’m sorry but my current commitments will prevent me from doing any consulting for you.

To contact me, please email me here.

Bartles' GoFundMe Auction Item #7: Full Manuscript + Submission Package Critique By Dakota Shain Byrd

About this item: A critique of a full, complete, and polished novel up to 75,000 words, synopsis, and query letter.

Donated by...
Dakota Shain Byrd
Twitter @shainbyrd

A believer in the magic of words and the change they can create, Dakota Shain Byrd's passion for writing bloomed when in the first grade he had to write a story about a little yellow chick that had lost it's mother--that little yellow chick ended up becoming a space knight and rescued his mom from a world eating dragon. From then on it was down the Rabbit Hole at full speed. A fierce lover of all things epic, stunning, and awe-inspiring, Dakota has often said, "My favorite films and TV shows are all space operas or scifi, my favorite novels are usually grounded in magic, and I love for both to have some form of romance to them, even if it's a side character's romance instead of the protagonist's." In line with that mentality, Dakota loves diversity and is totally LGBTQ* friendly--he's threatre student, a member of RWA and NTRWA, has written for and interned with The Dallas Voice, is a graduated Fellow of the Lambda Literary Writing Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices, was mentored by author Malinda Lo at the aforementioned retreat in the YA/Genre workshop, is blessed to be working with Rebecca Yarros on his manuscript, and is a card carrying member of #TeamFabulous! He's working on placing his first novel, a YA urban fantasy about a young man who's journey to become a mage is complicated by his best friend's disappearance, accusations of treason, and whispers that he killed her for her magic.

NOTE ABOUT MY PREFERENCES : While I read everything, my "expertise" if you will, is YA speculative fiction. So I can help you best if you've written a scifi, fantasy, or paranormal. I'm open to all subgenres, but I'm not the guy for horror because I just don't understand the construction of those stories well enough to help. Please only bid if your work features a protagonist who is a minority of some sort. Don't make your character a minority if they aren't already one because it will come off as fake and none of us want that. ;-) Also, to help you "get" me better, my favorite film is The Fifth Element (yes, I DO own the old PS1 video game) and my favorite novel is The Will of the Empress by Tamora Pierce. If you think you can make me laugh, tug at my tear ducts, or swoon, then I'm your guy. Also, if you have a YA or NA set around a theatre that's a behind the scenes kind of thing, SOOO bid. Or contact me directly and I may just mentor you on that premise alone because as a stagehand, that's something I'd love to see, and it CAN be Contemporary. When it comes to theatre, I make exceptions because everybody loves a dramatic train-wreck.

PLEASE NOTE: While I am offering a huge amount of help here with the critique of a full manuscript, query letter, and synopsis, please only bid on it if your project is complete, polished, and beyond draft number three. Thanks!

Starting Bid $10
